Michael McKisson Profile

Michael McKisson is an assistant professor in the University of Arizona School of Journalism. He teaches classes and helps students learn about journalism and technology. He describes himself as a "nerd" and a journalist.

He became interested in journalism during  high school, and since he enjoyed technology, he combined the two.

Journalism and technology play a big role in everyone’s lives. “Both are really exciting and really important,” McKisson said.

In his most recent work, he and his students produced a video using drones to show the different sides of the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders. He has also used 360-degree video cameras.

McKisson loves what he does. He is dedicated to his work and enjoys helping others learn about journalism and technology.

Fun on Fourth

On the first day of the workshop, we headed to Fourth Avenue to take pictures of people walking by, but the catch was we had to ask for their name.

I was terrified.

I did not want to ask people anything, but out of commitment and honesty, I pulled myself together and did it.

I thought I was going to ask maybe one person, then bail out on my partner and do nothing else, but the exact opposite happened. I was surprised because I'm not one to talk and interact, but I did. After the first people we photographed, we continued to do the assignment and took more pictures. It was exciting and cool. I actually wanted to talk to others.

Thoughts Prior

Coming into the journalism work shop, I was very skeptical, I was also scared. I am a person who loves to write, I write about anything and everything. Although I love to express myself with words on paper, I cannot do the same with communication.

I don't talk much; I would like to, but it’s difficult for me. Because I don't talk, I listen. I love listening to people's stories about their cats, their life, their favorite things, legit anything.
