Savannah Peña
My name is Savannah Peña and I am a senior at Tucson High. I am a varsity swimmer, graphic designer, and president of Red Army SkillsUSA .
SkillsUSA is a student-run organization that focuses on career development in careers. This year I helped set up many events and went to state competition. My teachers asked me if I was interested in journalism and yearbook because of everything I accomplished that year.
Before the worskshop, I had no experience with journalism or interviewing.
Coming to the diversity workshop, I didn’t know what to expect because I’ve never been interested in journalism or writing in general. My teacher encouraged me to participate so I can get an idea of how to prepare for my senior year as the editor-in-chief of the school’s yearbook, The Tucsonian.
I’m really glad I took the workshop because I’ve discovered that I don’t hate writing, and I actually really enjoy finding sources and doing interviews. What I liked the most about the workshop is that I got to choose the topic I was interested in and do more research.
During this week I learned that we need to educate ourselves, and I feel that I’ve done that by not only exploring my topic but also by meeting new people. I feel very prepared for next year, and I feel like I’ve learned so much and will take everything I learn with me next year when I become a journalist and an editor.
