My name is Isabela Gamez and I am going to be a senior at Tucson High School next fall. Being in this program was my first experience with journalism. I learned how to use a camera, how to research and get sources, and, best of all, how to effectively interview someone for my main story, which was on reaction to recent state abortion laws. The first in-person interview I did was with Génesis Cubillas, Raíz organizer for Planned Parenthood. At first I was nervous, but we ended up having a really good conversation about abortion laws and I found that interviewing someone was easier than I thought. You really have to allow the conversation to flow and be willing to allow it to go wherever it leads. I got very interesting information from her. After doing that interview, I was more confident going to the next one and knew what to expect. It was great practice for the real world, and now I’m more confident with talking to adults, which is a skill I need to have going into the workforce. Photos by Christiana Lincowski |
