Meeting Wilbur and Wilma for the first time

(written on June 10, 2016)
The first time I saw Wilbur and Wilma was when I was about 7 years old, at my first University of Arizona football game.
I was excited as my dad, my two brothers and a friend drove in the pickup truck from Phoenix down to Tucson to watch the Wildcats take on the Sun Devils. I woke up when we got into town, just in time to look around the university and see the scenery.
We parked relatively close to the stadium, got our tickets, and my dad bought me a jersey. I pulled the blue shirt on over my UA T-shirt.
I held my hand close to my 14-year-old brother as we made our way through the crowd. With my other hand I held onto my 5-year-old brother so he wouldn’t get bumped away from us.
Our seats were about half way up, along the 40- or 50-yard line.
We were early enough to grab a snack before the game, and just as we rounded a corner, there were Wilbur and Wilma greeting fans.
I felt a little shy, hiding behind my older brother, as we waited our turn.
Wilbur and Wilma were huge. They were friendly, yet they didn’t speak. I remember looking up at them thinking, “Is this really happening?”
The Wildcats lost that day. Over the years my brother stayed a die-hard Wildcats fan. I’m a fan of the Wildcats, too, and Wilma and Wilbur are the No. 1 mascots.

See the full story and sidebar on page 3 of The Chronicle and read about what it takes to be the UA mascots, as well as how their suits have changed over the years.

Second Day

I was assigned to interview a journalist who came the workshop to give a first-hand account of the jobs she has worked on in her career. She gave us some very helpful and important advice when it comes to being a journalist. Some of my favorite pieces of advice were, "Be open to people", "You have to be willing to leave the garbage behind", and "Remember who you are." Those were some of the things she said that really stood out for me, because it reminds me that not all reporters are bad, not all of them stretch the truth or lie about what ever there talking about. Not all media is bad. So after that we all went back to our story's we all are working on and I got scheduled a phone interview with they former Wilbur and Wilma. I also tried to get in contact with the head of cheerleading  but I couldn't get in touch so I was redirected to A women named Roberta Stout and see if she has a archive on Wilbur and Wilma, so it was a very interesting day.

I have been working on a little horror trailer about ravenous turtles taking there revenge the owner of a company that polluted their pond with dangerous chemicals, turning them into monsters. One of my friends, Oliver, played the corrupt boss and in the trailer he's just walking down the park and all of a sudden he gets attacked by a hoard of mutant turtles out of know where.

First Day

My first day on campus was something to behold. I couldn't believe that I was at the U of A, it was like a  "its really happening" moment. When I was given my room key and got to my dorm, my brothers were joking with me about having crazy college parties, but I knew they were just messing with me. After that my dad took my mother, my brothers, one of my cousins, and me around the campus to the library where they sell some souvenirs. After that I was a little nervous because I didn't want to be late to the student gathering. We sat in a group afterwards, introducing ourselves and discussing story ideas. I wanted to do the timeline of Wilbur's costume from then to now. After that we were escorted back to the dorms to eat, we had lasagna which was very good. Then we all walked around campus taking pictures of the campus, we went back to the dorms right after and started to unwind. So, my first day in the workshop was fun and I look forward to the rest of the week.
