She avoids eye contact, looking at the table or the ceiling. She still gestures wildly, but covers her mouth more. Carmen Duarte is telling us about a difficult interview, one involving a story about dead children. Her work gets to her, stays with her.
We asked for advice on talking to sources. "You don't have to be an ass," she says. And she clearly isn't, Carmen knows what she's talking about. She is an excellent and successful journalist.
Some people have the perception that reporters are nosy, disrespectful, and insensitive. If any of you think that way, please meet Carmen Duarte. She is a writer for the Arizona Daily Star who will shatter that viewpoint without even trying or meaning to.

We were greeted by Nancy Sharkey today, she engaged us all by asking questions based on our interests in journalism. Great way to engage teenagers: have them talk about themselves. This was followed by a lecture on Media Law and Ethics from Susan Swanberg. She engaged us through video-based discussion. Carmen Duarte followed.
All of the lectures given that day (Monday, day two) were engaging and thoughtful.

Today (Tuesday, day three) we had the opposite schedule. We began the day with work time and had a lecture at noon. This was on Multimedia Storytelling from Anna Augustowska. The lecture was very fun for me, mostly because it included lots of lists. Also, Anna showed us a video of hers from a year ago.

It was a video called "Anybody Can Dance" about Dancing in the Streets, Arizona (DITSAZ) - which is my old dance studio. It was really cool to see something I know very well portrayed so excellently. It was also a healthy dose of nostalgia that was much needed.
