Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a drug extracted from marijuana that has gained the attention of the public recently, with some people singing its praises for reducing pain.
Since passage of the 2014 Farm Bill, the growth of cannabis plants for research purposes and the production of CBD products have risen. The bill allowed hemp and cannabis plants to be grown in states where medical and recreational marijuana is legal, such as, Oregon, Nevada, California and Colorado.
CBD is a naturally occuring chemical compound, one of 113 cannabinoids in cannabis plants. CBD is legal in all 50 states, though with strict regulations. CBD can’t have a THC percentage over 0.3 percent, or it is considered marijuana.
According to Dr. Lynn Parodneck, a certified medical marijuana doctor in New York, cannabinoids are natural antiinflammatory drugs that are able to prevent psychoactive diseases.

While CBD is found in both hemp and marijuana plants, it is only extracted from hemp plants because of its high production of CBD, where as marijuana has a higher production of THC.
“THC is the psychoactive drug that allows you to get high, whereas CBD allows your body to fall into homeostasis, a parasympathetic state of healing,” said Steven Parks, an employee at Your CBD Store, on North Campbell Avenue in Tucson.
Hemp farms use both types of cannabis plants, sativa and indica, to help reach homeostasis. CBD oils are a supplement that is used to balance the natural cannabinoids your body produces, CBD, CBG, and CBN, that work with the cb1 and cb2 receptors in your body, which have an effect on appetite, pain sensation, mood and memory.
“When used with a good diet and physical activity CBD can produce amazing results. If not our body just builds a tolerance for the drug,” Parks said.
CBD is sold in a form of many variations including; oils, water solubles, edibles, lotions, pain creams, serums, vapors, face masks, and transdermal patches.
“The drug itself isn’t physically addictive, nor can you overdose on CBD. If you take a large amount the only side effect is drowsiness,” Parodneck said.
It is sold in a series of stages: the isolate, the broad spectrum, and the full spectrum, each having a different amount of THC.
Much CBD is grown in hemp farms in Colorado and sent in blocks to Tampa, Florida.
There they extract the CBD using the co2 extraction process, that uses pressurized carbon dioxide to pull the desired phytochemicals from a plant, then it is preserved.
“It must be preserved after extraction in order to give you the full experience,” said Parks.
After the preservation it is soaked in coconut oil, and sent to CBD stores across the country. Most users have reported benefits of the drug, including: improvements in sleep, stress soothing, mood, skin repair and protection, nervous system maladies, healthy heart promotion and pain management.
“CBD oils take at least 30 minutes to an hour to take effect, and lasts six to eight hours, water solubles take about 10 minutes, and last four to six hours,” Parks said.
CBD is able to enter the body system through digestion, smoking, application to the skin, and a directly to the bloodstream.
“Attitude has a lot to do with the way your body reacts to anything you ingest,” said a customer in Your CBD Store, who prefered to stay anonymous.
“My doctor told me I wasn’t going to be able to write with this hand or use this hand… it hasn’t been a year and I’m able to use this hand again,” said a customer at Your CBD Store, after being involved in an accident in which she broke her right hand.
Health and wellness retailers have started selling CBD products including stores such as; CVS pharmacies, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Ulta Beauty, GNC Holdings, and designer brands such as Urban Outfitters.
Ben and Jerry’s have plans to start producing CBD ice cream.
