Neto Portillo Jr. Arizona Daily Star columnist came to speak to us about his job. When he began to speak, his voice was loud and their was passion when he spoke. He grabbed everyone's attention as he walked around the room. I loved how he talked about how prideful he was of Mexicans. I loved the way he spoke! He included part of his personality, funny and relaxed. Some things he said stood out to me. "Throw down words. Then the words will talk to you."
"Don't be afraid to write."
"Everywhere you go you will write. You need a solid grip on it."
Say , "I can do it. I must do it."
I hope to find a job that I can be as passionate and devoted to as much as Neto is.
Dr. Cecil Schwalbe explained how to safely move rattlesnakes, and we observed how he used tongs to maneuver a snake from one trash can to another one. I decided to try it for the new experience. As I volunteered to do what we had just learned, my heart was pounding-so fast! I told myself that this was my opportunity to try something I was scared to do. I decided to change my fear into excitement! So, I did it, extremely anxious and scared, but I did it. I felt amazing being able to use the technique Cecil had demonstrated for us.
We also got to hold a harmless snake. The Colombian red-tail boa is my latest fashionable accessory. I am totally kidding. A few mentors joked about it upon viewing my photo. It was nice getting to feel the snake's texture. It reminded me of a fish. As it slithered across my back, I was frozen, I still couldn't believe I was holding a snake! Never in a million years would I have tried it. As it slithered across my back, it almost felt as if I were getting a back massage, haha.
All in all, it was a great experience. I am proud of myself for standing up to my fear of snakes.
Today I got to interview Gary Shepard, the art director for Bear Essential News. Bear Essential News has changed throughout time. I got to hold the very first newspaper from 1979! Bear Essentials was my favorite newspaper as a child. Every time we went to the library, I would pick up a newspaper. I loved the search and find. It was an honor getting to finally meet the amazing artist. As I Interviewed him, it was eye opening finding out things about his life I wouldn't have known. Gary is good-hearted and brilliant. It's incredible how one human being can create a sensation like Boomer and live in the minds of many, including myself. I had the opportunity to interview and meet Gary personally; it is an experience I won't ever forget.
