Hour one starts with five texts from Pascal, a familiar face from school, who is also attending the workshop. I thought I'd check-in promptly at 11:30, unpack, and hide away with my friend from school in a cafe or another safe place. Boy was I wrong.
The first peer I meet is Jane Bendickson, a student returning to the workshop. No pressure Bianca, she just knows a whole lot more about the program than you, no need to be more intimidated....
Thankfully, Jane is not an evil witch (or roommate), but someone who shares my interests and has a SMART goal of being a friend to everyone in the workshop. Well, Jane...one down, nine to go. Five days left.
Since my initial planning didn't go as planned (which usually doesn't happen...yes, I check weather reports, make appointments, and set numerous alarms), I thought I'd count how many things I could get wrong about college in preparation for the year after twelfth grade. Though I'm only staying in the UA dorm for a week, and it's day two of six, here is my starting list of myths:
1) It's hard to make friends...FALSE.
2) You eat crap...FALSE. (I've actually gotten a full plate of homemade food and desserts each meal). Thanks Tom.
3) Your professors aren't always there to help...FALSE. Thank you Elena, and the UA Diversity Workshop mentors. Your time and attention is VERY much appreciated.
That's all for the first two days. Three myths to encounter within the first two days says a lot to me about what's said and spread around. I'm looking forward to my eye-opening adventures over the next four days, and will post a follow-up blog when I find out more. All of these myths are having me think...is this it? Is this college? Is this my life in one short, short year?
Bianca :)
