Paloma Boykin helps students get from A to Z

(written June 10, 2016)
Paloma Boykin is the academic advisor at the University of Arizona School of Journalism. She helps undergrad students with their classes, navigating university procedures and protocols and to get them to graduation. She also helps students by listening to them - whether it be personal or financial.
One way Boykin prepares for all her students is by helping them make their class schedules, making class rosters and checking in with them to make sure their classes are in order.
Summer has just begun and Boykin is making sure that her students are on the right track to graduate.
“As an academic advisor you can prepare for the busy times but, in reality, you can’t prepare because things change,” Boykin said.
Boykin has been working at UA for seven years and knows who can help a student when they have an issue with admissions, financial aid, registration, the bursar’s office or housing.
She tells students to come to her now, rather than later.
She said students can start looking for colleges, look at tuition, think about what you want to study and visit the campus.
Time management is a big part of applying and getting your choices ready for the fall of your senior year and to prepare for your freshman year of college.
“It is never too early to prepare,” Boykin said.  “Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

Today we are always told that we take things for granted, that all we want are material things , and all we think about is ourselves.

I'll be honest, anyone can act selfish even if it doesn't seem like it, but I want to remind everyone that we should stop and take a breather, to take it all in that you've worked your butt of to be where you are and you can do much better if you keep doing your best, keep learning.

You also want to thank the people around you for helping you get to where you are today because if they never met you or never knew you then your life wouldn't be the way it is. Even if they give you a hard time, its for your own good; it makes you stronger so your ready to face the meanest and the harshest test life has in store for you.

Wake up happy that you have a healthy life, that you life in a free country, and have people around you that love and cherish you. Make sure that you know what you have and what ever you have take care of it; whether it be someone, a car, a house, an object you own or just yourself. Other kids your age in other countries don't have the luxury life you have here in the U.S. so I highly encourage you to be aware of what you have and don't take it for granted.

You only have one life to live it to the fullest and your only 16 to 21 once. So have fun, but be safe.

Breaking the Bubble

When I was accepted to this program I wasn't scared nor nervous. I was anxious, because I knew what I was getting myself into and that joining this program opens new doors for you; it gives you more options than a person who's never participated. Joining these kinds of summer programs open doors of experience and opportunities that don't come from all high schools.
It's only been 2 days into this program and I've made friends with everyone, learned how to play new games and see things in a different perspective. And I've learned how different our backgrounds help us make the right decision. I believe that the more you explore out of your comfort zone the more you know, the more aware you are and you take that back home with stories, and all of these descriptions of the things, places and people come flowing out like you were just there. I push to go anywhere and everywhere, to make an adventure.
