Coming into the Journalism program, I was accompanied by 15 other high school students. Although a diverse group, we all had one thing in common. We all seemed to take selfies. While strolling through town, we would often be overwhelmed with excitement. What was our first instinct? Time to take a selfie.
Selfies unify us as a group. Two people who hardly know one another can be brought together, and smiles are shared. Despite the sometimes forced nature of our smiles, taking a selfie is an experience to share with peers. Not only are memories documented, but it is also a way of remembering people. The selfie is a new trend that has been on the rise in 2014.
But first… Let me take a selfie.

With the song “#SELFIE,” apps like Snapchat and Instagram, selfies continue to dominate social media. There are interesting takes on the selfie trend, from celebrities, to Coca-Cola’s advertising; selfies have become a common part of our culture. Like most new things, selfies do have controversy that accompanies them. Some think it leads to an increase in a spread of lice, and are concerned with the conceit it entails.
So what does it all mean? Like most new trends, we can’t foresee what selfies will create in the future. Eventually, they will become a part of our everyday lingo, if they aren’t already. Photography will forever be different because of the selfie, and who knows what will be next.
