As I approached the Gila Hall here in Tucson, Arizona my heart pounded due to nervousness. When I entered the doors of the dorm I saw Elena Stauffer, the director of the workshop. She greeted me very kindly and handed me a folder with our schedule for the week. I went to the front desk and got my room key, then I meet my mentor.
My aunt and I went up the stairs to my room. There is where I met my roommate. She was very kind, welcoming, and tall. I put all my stuff in the closet and unpacked some of my stuff. I covered the bed with my sheets and blanket. After that it was time to go downstairs for the meeting.
I walked into the lobby where the other students awaited for the workshop. My aunt and I sat on a seat in the middle of three couches. I looked around the room and I only recognized one face, the others were new. I remember thinking, “This is going to be a long week.”
After the meeting everyone walked to the building where we were going to do everything for the workshop. We went into a room called the reading room. There is where we introduced ourselves and listened to guest speakers. After the speakers, we said goodbye to our loved ones. I sat in this room with people I hardly knew but I knew I had to talk sooner or later. I stayed quiet because I was so nervous to talk to anyone.
We rearranged the chairs into a circular form and sat down to talk about what we wanted to write for the newspaper. After that we got released for dinner. A couple of people and I went to Chipotle. Soon we all were in our dorms getting ready for bed.
Throughout the week I got to know these people who were once strangers to me. They are now all my friends and I enjoyed the past week with them. I have learned that words can have lots of meaning and simple questions can become something amazing. Also I have gained so much confidence in talking to people without worries. This is very important to me because it will help me throughout my life in many ways. I enjoyed this workshop and the people I met here.
