"Every adventure starts with one step."
The first day at the University of Arizona School of Journalism workshop is slowly coming to a close. It started at the Apache Santa Cruz Dorms where we all unpacked our bags and got comfortable before we headed out to start our adventure. We met at the Marshall building for an intro presentation held by our host, Elena Stauffer. We watched a short film by another presenter and said goodbye to our parents. As our farewells were bid we moved the chairs around into a circular formation and then the real stuff began.
News time began. As we gathered ourselves around the chairs it was time to get serious. We shared our ideas for the weeks stories. As we went around the room we heard ideas ranging from TUSD slacking on sex education to basketball to how the CoOp was increasing environmental awareness. As our ideas were spreading in our minds, we went to the computer lab. There we set up our log-in to a long week of computer work. Folders were made and assignments for the week were put out there. Then we returned to the dorms.
We went our separate ways again. Once at the dorms, it was time to hang. I pulled out my portable record player and started playing some Elton John. We then made our way to the dorm basement where we were to hang out and eat dinner. it was a while before dinner was served so we spent time getting to know each other. the music played as the smiles rolled up. Then it was time to eat.
Savory cuisine was served. On the menu tonight was lasagna with salad, bread, and dessert. Elena's husband and daughter prepared this Italian meal three ways; with meat, vegetarian, and special for those who can't eat mushrooms. It was a delicious meal that was served with great conversations. Then it was time to take some pictures.
Snap! The cameras were pulled out and pictures were taken. The group walked out and about the campus and took in the beauty the university offered. My first snap was of the big stadium. It didn't end there. Pictures of Old Main, the fountain, cacti, plants, the trees, and even the streets made it onto my camera. And that is where we ended our night.
On the computer they went and that is where our day ends. As I finish my post to the sounds of classic rock, I look back on today and remember that my first step was made and the journey has begun.
