Fly as an exquisite butterfly, with a sting like a killer bee. She’s not the one to mess with. To say she is beautiful would be an understatement. Not only are her features appealing to the eye, but her spirit is just as charming. To call her smart wouldn’t even be the half of it. She’s clever and always quick on her feet, ready with at least three different comebacks at any given moment. Her charismatic sense of style is a creative masterpiece, saturated with vibrant colors and class. She carries herself with confidence and grace, ready for whatever the world throws at her. She’s absolutely incredible, to say the least, and a person I am proud to say is not only a mentor but someone I call friend.
Zeina Peterson is a remarkable woman. Although I have known her just a week, the impact she has had on me is indescribable. She has taught me so much in a matter of days. Initially, I was confused why she referred to everyone as queen. But over the course of this week, I realized something about her: She sees the beauty and value in everyone. Zeina reminded me that we are all so important and worth more than gold, so why would we allow anyone to treat us differently? We literally are queens, and she saw that in us before we even saw it in ourselves. It is easy to feel that mistakes define who you are as a person, but Zeina showed me that these faults do not determine who we are but help shape us into the person we will become.
Seeing her gives me hope. It is easy to feel that things are never going to change, but after hearing some of her story, I see that I am still so young and have so much time to grow and become the woman I am supposed to be. Zeina is such an amazing young woman in so many different ways. It is nice to see someone who has skin just like mine and hair just like mine; a young black woman just like me, doing something with her life. Oftentimes women in general, and black women especially, are seen as inferior and unworthy. Zeina is the complete opposite of this stereotype, and I aspire to defy the odds, just like her.
Writing keeps people alive even long after they're gone. Years from now, when we are all long gone, I want people to remember this wonderful, crazy, undeniably marvelous human named Zeina Peterson. Of all the people worth remembering, she is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of them.
