University of Arizona journalism senior Christianna Silva found her passion like many other students—by trial and error.
During her freshman year, Silva enrolled in several classes, falling in love with Arabic studies. The Sierra Vista resident was surprised by the beauty of the culture. She decided that journalism would allow her the opportunity to learn about many cultures and traditions.
In the fall of 2015, her life as a recognized journalist began. She approached professor Michael McKisson to work on starting a chapter of the national Online News Association in the School of Journalism.
The two began a Kickstarter fund to get equipment to make a 360-degree virtual reality video of the annual All Souls Procession, which includes a miles-long parade through city streets to honor people who have passed. The event also includes burning an urn at the finale.
Through the courses and clubs available at the University of Arizona, a small-town girl is able to learn about the world—one culture, event, and tradition at a time.
